This is from early 1976, on the south side of groin 13, just in front of Tex and Dorothy's yard (Anders Jensen's today). Note how much closer the sand is to the top of Richard's (Kealy's) and Tex's walls. Note - these are the original houses.
This one's taken from the bottom of the southernmost steps to the beach at really high tide, probably after a storm, looking South at Mayo Beach. The grass is Tex and Dorothy's (Jensen's) yard. Maybe Summer of '84. You can see how much higher the sand was on the wall back then.
This is taken from the southernmost steps, looking North, showing the wooden wall (groin 12) in the late 70's, or early 80's. You can tell it's at high tide, because the wall is barely showing. Even with the tide that high, there is still a lengthy beach and beach grass. This was where I put the volleyball court.
Groin 12/wooden wall at high tide, probably early 80's. Lots of sand behind me there.
This was late 80's. Groin 13 is on the left. Looking at Mayo beach. Lots of sand here!
Groin 13. IMPORTANT! When the groins were repaired a handful of years ago, they made new groin 13 too short. They were supposed to be repaired with larger rocks over the original groin's footprint, but it wasn't rebuilt nearly long enough. Many years ago, my parents planted a pole at the end of the groin to mark the rocks so we didn't sail our sunfish sailboat over them, and so we didn't walk on the rocks and get sliced up by the barnacles. (The pole is here in this photo. Ice took it away around 8 years ago.) Is the shortened groin a major contributor to the erosion of the southernmost beaches?
Here's the pole, up close.
Tex and Dorothy's (Jensen's) yard. It's not high tide, so you can see plenty of sand in front of it.
Between groin 12 and 13. Lots of sand there in '99.
Looking North around Tidgewell's beach area. Plenty of sand. '87-'88-ish.
Same day as above. Looking northward from around the beach in front of the Tidgewell's. LOTS of sand!
Beach by groin 13, probably Summer of '84, maybe '85. Lots of sand!
Groin 12 on the right. Lots of sand and grass. This is likely around 2002-2004-ish.
Lots of sand between groins 12 and 13 in 1986!
Plenty of sand here. Groin 12. I think this is around '88-'89.
Plenty of sand here. Groin 12. I think this is around '88-'89.
This is during the storm that broke Tex and Dorothy's bulkhead. The water was about as high as it was here over the Summer.
Tex and Dorothy's wall taking a beating before the groin repairs years ago.
The aftermath of that storm that broke Tex and Dorothy's wall. Looking at groin 13.
Around '82-'83. Building a volleyball court on the beach between groins 12 and 13. There was plenty of sand there for it, even at high tide.
The completed volleyball court on the beach between groins 12 and 13. Looking to the north. Plenty of room for the entire net, even at high tide. Tidgewell's beach in the background had plenty of sand.
1974, I think. Looking north at Richard's wall and groins 13 and 12.
This was taken from the south. The purple martin house on the left was in Tex and Dorothy's yard. Lots of sand!
This was the beach at Mayo Beach at around 1978. They had lots of sand there back then, too.
This is Mayo Beach in 1978. There was a big beach back then. Now, the water nearly comes up to these trees.
After a storm at high tide in 1975. Richard's wall is on the right and Tex and Dorothys' wall is beyond that. Looking south from around groin 12. This is where we later built the volleyball court.
